If that is an accurate statement of the view of those authors on the second law, and I must admit to not having read a word of what they have written on the subject, then I consider it to be very much a minority view among physicists who have any more than a passing acquaintance with thermodynamics and statistical mechanics. The whole subject of thermodynamics relates to the kinds of changes that are observed to occur, and that are said and predicted to be possible, in macroscopic systems, for which there is in general no definite knowledge of the complete internal state of the system – described in terms of, say, the state of the particles, or in more modern parlance, the fields that make it up. The first such reasonably rigourous axiomatization was given by Caratheodory in the early 20th century. There have been many more since. But all formulations need the first and the second laws – the first law relates to an apparently reversible property of the changes that occur in macroscopic systems. The second law relates to an apparently irreversible property of the changes that are observed to occur in macroscopic systems.
